Description
The golden lion tamarin, also known as the golden marmoset, is a small monkey, native to Brazil. These tamarins inhabit lowland coastal rain forest which have tangles of vines and bromeliads. They use the vines to travel between trees. The bromeliads attract insects and amphibians, which are an excellent source of protein and fats. Golden lion tamarins are omnivores, eating a wide variety of fruits, insects and other invertebrates, as well as small vertebrates and bird eggs. With more and more of the rainforest being destroyed, the golden lion tamarin is an endangered species. If anyone is interested, there is a US organization working with a Brazilian nonprofit to save these unique animals. (See below)
Save the Golden Lion Tamarin (SGLT) is a U.S.-based public charity that provides technical and financial support to help Associação Mico-Leão-Dourado achieve our shared vision of saving GLTs and the habitat they depend upon for survival.
Our science-based goal: By 2025, at least 2,000 Golden Lion Tamarins living in at least 25,000 hectares (62,000 acres) of connected and protected forest. There are enough GLTs and enough remaining forest, but to reach our goal the forest must be connected and protected.
