Description
The Purple Gallinules are big, beautifully colored birds of southern and tropical wetlands. Adult purple gallinules have purple-blue plumage that can appear green and turquoise when in good lighting. Adults also have a pale blue shield on their forehead, which connects with the red and yellow bill.
With their strong legs and long toes, which help them walk onto floating vegetation by distributing their weight, they run about on open shorelines, clamber through marshes and walk on floating lily pads. When they fly, usually only short distances, their legs hang down.
The Purple Gallinules are found mainly in the southeast and the tropics, but single birds sometimes stray far to the north.
