Description
All dressed up and nowhere to go. This cement alligator once lived in a pond at the McKee Botanical Gardens in Vero Beach, Florida. Sadly, he is no longer there. He was a relic of a time when there were many natural tourist attractions throughout the state of Florida.
The McKee Botanical Garden opened in 1932 as McKee Jungle Gardens and boasted a collection of orchids and water lilies. They also brought in monkeys, birds and animals from around the world to add to the jungle atmosphere. At one time the Jungle Gardens became on of the most popular of roadside attractions. During the 1940' s the gardens attracted over 100,000 visitors per year.
Sadly, the opening of Walt Disney World drew tourists away from the more natural attractions and one by one they have disappeared from the Florida roadsides. In 1976, McKee Jungle Gardens closed its doors.
Luckily, the Indian River Land Trust purchased a portion of the land and have worked to restore it to its former glory. In 2001 the park was reopened as the McKee Botanical Gardens and is listed as both a Florida Landmark and a National Historic landmark. It boasts beautiful flowers, orchids and water plants.

Oh too funny! Right at first, I thought when you said "cement alligator" that was a particular breed of alligator LOL -- and I was going to compliment you on the amazing close-up! I'm glad to realize you weren't actually endangering your life for this photo. (wink)

Whatdayamean - nowhere to go !? I have you know that I am on my way to a Trump Party. Or are your suggesting that HE has nowhere to go ? :-)
