In this image, captured at Vierra Wetlands in Brevard County, Florida, a tiny Sandhill Crane colt ambles along the shore line with its mother. These tall, gray-bodied, crimson-capped birds breed in open wetlands, fields, and prairies across North America. Although some start breeding at two years of age, Sandhill Cranes may reach the age of seven before breeding. They mate for life—which can mean two decades or more—and stay with their mates year-round. Juveniles stick close by their parents for 9 or 10 months after hatching.
Sandhill Crane chicks, called colts, can leave the nest within 8 hours of hatching, and are even capable of swimming
Born in New Jersey but transplanted to Florida at the age of three, I now reside in Jensen Beach, Florida. I consider myself an opportunistic photographer, attracted by the composition of nature: green leaves against the bright blue sky, a yellow leaf floating on the dark water of a stream - colors, textures, patterns, light and shadow, or an unexpected encounter. As I continue to study the art of photography, I try to find new ways to highlight and show the beauty of nature.
