Artist's Description
Chilkoot Trail National Historic Site of Canada.
The path seen in the picture is the end of the Chilkoot Trail at Bennett, British Columbia, Canada.
The Chilkoot Trail starts in Dyea, Alaska, in the United States, and runs 33 miles through the Coast Mountains to end at Bennett. It was originally used as a major trade route by the Tingit Indians and was later used by explorers and prospectors.
During the Klondike Gold Rush (1896-1899), the Chilkoot Trail became a major transportation route into the Yukon. Of the several overland routes, the Chilkoot Trail was the most direct, least expensive. and because of that, it became the most popular.
Today the Chilkoot Trail is a popular recreational trail, attracting hikers from around the world. Access is limited and managed by the National Park Service and Parks Canada.
The trail is usually opened to hikers from late May to early September.
About Jo Ann Gregg
Born in New Jersey but transplanted to Florida at the age of three, I now reside in Jensen Beach, Florida. I consider myself an opportunistic photographer, attracted by the composition of nature: green leaves against the bright blue sky, a yellow leaf floating on the dark water of a stream - colors, textures, patterns, light and shadow, or an unexpected encounter. As I continue to study the art of photography, I try to find new ways to highlight and show the beauty of nature. I also find enjoyment in the creative aspect of digital-editing, taking photography in a new or unexpected direction. I appreciate your visit to my site and hope you enjoy my photographs. Should you feel a special affinity to one of my images, they are...
