Description
As a Northeaster pounds our northern states, 10 to 15 foot ground swells are generated and travel to the Florida coast. When these swells reach Gilbert’s Bar House of Refuge, the waves crash on the rocks, sending spray high into the air.
The HOUSE OF REFUGE at Gilbert’s Bar is the last remaining of 10 built along the east coast of Florida. Built in 1876 at a time when the coast of Florida was sparsely inhabited, these houses were staffed by “keepers” whose mission was to find, rescue and minister to those who were shipwrecked on the treacherous reefs and shoals off the Florida coast. Prior to the construction of these houses, many shipwreck victims made it to the isolated shore and then perished of starvation and thirst.
Today the House of Refuge, located near Stuart, FL, is a museum dedicated to the regions maritime heritage and is open for guided tours.
