Three Anhingas share a patch of floating vegetation as they spread their wings to dry.
The American Anhinga, or Water Turkey as it is sometimes called, can be found throughout Florida. The feathers of the Anhinga are not waterproof which allows it to dive and swim after fish. Because the feathers become saturated, you will often see Anhinga along the shore with its wings spread and drying.
The male is black all over except for the white shoulders and upper wings. The female has a buff-brown neck instead of black.
Born in New Jersey but transplanted to Florida at the age of three, I now reside in Jensen Beach, Florida. I consider myself an opportunistic photographer, attracted by the composition of nature: green leaves against the bright blue sky, a yellow leaf floating on the dark water of a stream - colors, textures, patterns, light and shadow, or an unexpected encounter. As I continue to study the art of photography, I try to find new ways to highlight and show the beauty of nature.
